Dog Walkers in Elche, Spain

Elche has an advantage for dog walking that exists in no other European city: two hundred thousand palm trees inside the urban core. The historic palm grove, a World Heritage site, is not a park you visit but a weave that runs through the city, its orchards separated by irrigation channels and its paths linking entire neighbourhoods under high shade. In a district where summer is hard and rain is scarce, that continuous shade completely changes what can be done with a dog between June and September.

The city is also very flat, which makes it kind to older animals or those with joint problems. You can cross on foot from Carrús to Altabix without one serious rise, and the bed of the Vinalopó, though it usually runs dry, organises a green axis through the centre from north to south.

The climate is among the driest in Europe, in line with Alicante: around three hundred litres a year and sunshine all but guaranteed. That means outings are rarely cancelled, but also that the ground is hard and dusty much of the year, and paw-pad wear needs more attention than northern habits allow.

Beyond the core, the municipality reaches the sea and contains the Clot de Galvany, a protected wetland among dunes where the landscape changes completely: lagoons, birdlife and sand paths half an hour from the centre. It is the usual weekend outing for anyone wanting something other than asphalt — with the caveat that in a place of that character the lead stops being a legal formality and becomes a matter of respect for the fauna nesting there.
