What to know first
Adopting isn't a cheaper version of buying. It's a different thing, with its own demands.
The animal arrives with a history
Many come from abandonment or mistreatment, and it shows up as specific fears that take months to ease, not days.
There's a process, and that's good
An interview, a home visit, sometimes a fostering period. A shelter that asks you nothing isn't protecting anyone.
The first days are the worst
The settling-in period can be hard and says nothing about what the animal will be like in three months.
